About the Author

Fränz Colling was born 1940. He studied at the Swiss University of Technology in Zurich, where he took a degree in electronics. He worked as an engineer (1964) in the Central Office for Nuclear Measurement in Geel, Belgium, before moving, in 1972, to the ARBED steel group (now ARCELOR) in Luxembourg, where he worked on computer-led automation projects for steel works and laboratories. In 1979 he was elected to the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies. He was re-elected three times (1984, 1989, 1994). From 1984 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Christian Social Party parliamentary group. His particular interest was in research, universities and health.

Since 1996 he has been a member of the European Court of Auditors, with responsibility for internal policy and research.
